Ghana’s Inspiring Strides towards a Digitised Economy: Dr. Bawumia’s Digital Drive, a Man of Vision

A Credible Politician

BY : ENOCH OWUSU-APPIAH

Located in West Africa, Ghana is widely known for its beautiful culture and stunning natural beauty. However, in recent years, the country has gained recognition for its impressive advancement in digitisation, thanks in large part to the efforts of the most effective Vice President in Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Under his leadership, the government has implemented several policies and initiatives aimed at leveraging technology to improve service delivery and create a more efficient economy. The implementation of the Ghana Card, Digital Address System, Mobile Money Payments Interoperability System, etc, in Ghana, have been the cornerstones of this digital transformation.

The Ghana Card initiative is one of Dr. Bawumia’s most notable accomplishments in the field of digitisation. The Ghana Card is a biometric national identity card that is intended to collect personal information and biometric data from all Ghanaian citizens and residents.
The Ghana Card is a critical component of the country’s digitisation goal as it provides a secure and reliable method of identifying citizens and residents. This, in turn, improves access to public services such as healthcare, education, and social assistance programs not forgetting its security benefits.

The digitisation agenda has also extended to the health sector, with the implementation of the Medical Drone Delivery System. It is the world’s largest medical drone delivery network which is operated by Zipline International and makes on-demand delivery of medical supplies to about 2,000 health facilities. The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) was not left out in the digital revolution. The mobile renewal service allows NHIS subscribers to renew their insurance using their mobile phones, thus reducing the need for physical visits to NHIS offices. The new addition is the E-pharmacy which allows subscribers to enter drug prescriptions and make requests, the system also allows subscribers to be linked to multiple licensed pharmacy shops online to compare prices and be assured of quality medications.

In the finance sector, the government through Dr. Bawumia has implemented the Mobile Money Interoperability system, which allows for seamless transfer of funds between different mobile money platforms. This system has helped to increase financial inclusion in Ghana by making it one of the first nations to employ a universal QR Code payment system that accepts both bank accounts and mobile wallets. This project has also made Ghana the fastest-growing mobile money market in Africa, with over 36.9 million registered mobile money accounts.

One of the key pillars of Ghana’s digitization agenda is the National Digital Property Addressing System (NDPAS), also known as the Ghana Post GPS. The system was launched in 2017 to provide every property in Ghana with a unique digital address, making it easier for citizens to identify their location and access various services. The system is accessible via a mobile app, which allows users to search for addresses and also provides directions to the location.

Another significant initiative under Dr. Bawumia’s leadership is the paperless port system. The system, which was implemented in 2018, aims to reduce the time and cost of doing business at Ghana’s ports by digitising the entire process. With the paperless system, all documentation is done electronically, reducing the need for physical inspections and enabling real-time tracking of cargo.

Dr. Bawumia was also instrumental in the implementation of Ghana’s e-procurement system, which aims to streamline the procurement process. The e-procurement system is an online platform that allows government agencies and private-sector organisations to publish tenders and receive bids from vendors. The e-procurement system has helped to minimize corruption, improve transparency, and increase efficiency in the public procurement process by digitising the procurement process. This, in turn, has resulted in significant cost savings for the government and enhanced service delivery to citizens.

Dr. Bawumia’s initiatives to accelerate digitisation in Ghana have had a substantial impact on the country’s progress. The use of digital solutions in many different sectors has not only increased productivity and minimised costs, but it has also increased transparency and accountability.

As the world continues to embrace digital solutions, Ghana’s digitisation efforts under Dr. Bawumia’s leadership serve as a shining example of what can be achieved with political will, vision, and commitment to innovation. The country is well on its way to becoming a digital hub in the region, and Dr. Bawumia’s vision and contributions will undoubtedly be remembered as a critical part of this success story.

credible politician

source: myjoyonline.com

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia says Africa is open for business and committed to creating a more integrated, dynamic and prosperous continent through trade partnerships and investments.
He, therefore, urged African governments and businesses to work together to promote this unique potential to attract foreign investment and create sustainable partnerships that would benefit the continent and its international partners.
“Ghana is proud of being at the forefront in this network and we look forward to working amongst partners worldwide to create a more equitable and sustainable future,” he said.
Vice President Bawumia said this in a keynote address at the opening of the 53rd General Assembly of the World Trade Centres Association (WTCA) in Accra on Monday.

“Towards African Economic Integration and Enhanced Global Presence” is the theme for the five-day conference.
The World Trade Centre, Accra is hosting the event, which attracted more than 350 delegates worldwide including captains of industries, business executives, heads of government institutions and civil society organisations.
Ghana, thus, becomes the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to host the General Assembly of the WTCA, where participants would deliberate and explore trade and investment opportunities in Africa and foster partnerships.

Vice-President Bawumia commended the WTCA for launching an initiative called “Pivot to Africa” aimed at whipping up investment drive for the continent.
“It comes at a time Africa is experiencing significant economic growth and transformation with immense opportunities for investment and trade,” he said.
“The World Trade Centres Association recognises the enormous potential of the African market and the need to leverage it for their mutual growth.”
“Ghana is fully committed to supporting this initiative and working with the World Trade Centres Association to enhance African investment and trade.”
Vice President Bawumia called for concerted efforts by all stakeholders including governments, businesses and civil society to promote Africa’s unique potential to attract foreign investments and create sustainable partnerships.

Over the past six years, President Akufo-Addo unreservedly promoted Ghana and Africa beyond aid, aimed at ensuring an integrated agenda of economic independence in Africa by leveraging its natural resources for global partnerships in the best interests of the people.
“Therefore, we should remain committed to free and fair trade and work together to create a level playing field for all,” Dr Bawumia said.
“It is imperative for Africa to invest in innovative technology to advance its competitiveness on the global market and drive economic growth.”
The Government had also established a strong foundation by leveraging on the Fourth Industrial Revolution and implementing the digitalisation agenda towards streamlining public processes and services and removing bottlenecks that impeded progress in almost all sectors of the economy.
The creation of a unique identification for all Ghanaians by issuing of the Ghana-Card, mobile money interoperability payment system, which had enhanced financial inclusion, and roll-out of the digital property addressing system for easy location of properties are examples of the digitalisation drive.

The Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Mr Wamkele Mene indicated that any continent that ignored Africa’s trade potential did so at its own peril because “the continent is the future of the world’s economy.”
Through AfCFTA, Africa had taken concrete steps towards economic integration, he said and cited the establishment of the Pan African Payments and Settlement System, which ensured that businesses could engage in cross-border transactions using a digital payment system.
He expressed optimism that Africa’s combined trade value would hit $16 trillion by 2050 in view of the various steps taken to integrate economically.
“The doors of the continent are open for business partnerships and investments for their mutual benefits.”
The Chairman of the World Trade Centres Association, Mr John E. Drew, said the world should add value to Africa’s economic opportunities to ensure growth and prosperity for all.

He assured that the WTCA would work closely with Africa productively and co-operatively to advance their cause.
He entreated the participants to build strong networks and establish business partnerships towards achieving the objectives of the conference.
Togbe Afede XIV, the Executive Chairman, World Trade Centre, Accra, in his welcome address, said Africa’s three billion population was a great asset and its 20 per cent coverage of the world’s land mass provided a fertile ground to feed the world.

The mineral wealth and arable land was a launching pad for the world’s food security and economic transformation.
He expressed confidence that with the integration process progressing steadily, Africa would soon increase its current two and three per cent global trade and gross domestic product to a reasonable level.

Below is the Facebook post with and image of the data:
“Dear friends, I recently stated that our government has created over 2 million jobs since 2017. As usual, the naysayers have questioned how we could have done so. Their mindset of impossibility prevents them from accepting that. Revolutionizing Financial Inclusion: The Introduction of E-Zwich in Ghana, Driven by Visionary Dr. Bawumia

E-Zwich is a revolutionary payment system that has transformed the way Ghanaians carry out financial transactions. This innovative platform was introduced to Ghana in 2008, and it has since become a crucial component in the country’s financial landscape. The brain behind the introduction of E-Zwich in Ghana is none other than Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a man of vision.

Dr. Bawumia is an economist and a banker by profession, with vast experience in both fields. He served as the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana from 2006 to 2009, where he championed the adoption of new payment systems to improve financial inclusion in the country. During his tenure, he introduced several innovative initiatives, including the E-zwich payment system, which has had a significant impact on the country’s financial system.

The concept of implementing an electronic payment system in Ghana was not novel, as previous attempts to launch similar programmes had failed. However, these efforts were not effective owing to a lack of infrastructure and the expensive cost of implementation.
Dr. Bawumia recognised the need for a fresh approach to make electronic payments a reality in Ghana.

The introduction of E-Zwich was part of an extensive financial inclusion agenda that aimed to promote access to financial services for all Ghanaians. Before the introduction of E-Zwich, the financial landscape in Ghana was dominated by traditional banking institutions that served only a small percentage of the population. Most Ghanaians, particularly those in rural areas had limited access to financial services, which hindered their ability to participate fully in the country’s economy.

E-Zwich was designed to bridge this gap by providing a reliable and accessible payment system for all Ghanaians. The platform allows users to access their funds using biometric identification, which ensures that only the rightful owner can access their account. This feature has made it easier for Ghanaians to access financial services, particularly those who lack formal identification documents.

The feat of E-Zwich in Ghana has been phenomenal, with over 2.7 million Ghanaians registered on the platform as of 2021. The system has been used to disburse government social intervention funds, as well as the LEAP and NHIS payments, and has also been used to pay salaries for public sector workers, including NSS personnel.

In conclusion, the introduction of E-Zwich in Ghana by a Bawumia led team has had momentous impact on the country’s financial system, a testament to him being one of the competent politician in Ghana. The platform has provided access to financial services for millions of Ghanaians and has transformed the way financial transactions are carried out in the country, also, it has aided in advancing financial inclusion, lowering financial crime rates, and expanding access to financial services. It is a proof to the supremacy of innovation and the significance of financial inclusion in promoting economic growth and development.

The General Jurisdiction High Court (12) in Accra has ordered Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress, to pay GH¢500,000 in damages to Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Minister of Energy.
This follows the court’s decision in favor of the minister in a defamation case he brought in 2019 against Sammy Gyamfi, which was heard by Justice Charles Gyamfi Danquah.
When he was the minister of education, Dr. Opoku Prempah filed a lawsuit against the NDC communicator for claiming that Seidu Mba, one of the suspects detained in connection with the kidnapping of two Canadian girls in Kumasi, was his (Dr. Prempah’s) errand boy.
Justice Charles Gyamfi Danquah ruled during the hearing on Thursday (October 13, 2022) that Sammy Gyamfi had defamed Dr. Opoku Prempeh with his utterances.
Sammy Gyamfi was also fined GH¢500,000, and the judge also ordered him to apologize and recant his false remark within seven days of the ruling with the same prominence as the initial assertion.

MAHAMA WILL STILL GRANT AMNESTY TO GALAMSEY OPERATORS – JOYCE BAWA-MOGTARI

Joyce Bawa Mogtari, a Special Aide for former President John Mahama, has affirmed the next government of Mahama will still grant amnesty to alleged illegal miners awaiting prosecution in jail and some convicted miners. Prior to the 2020 general election, John Mahama promised the people of Odum-Banso, a galamsey community in the Western Region that he will grant amnesty to arrested galamsey operators.

Joyce Bawa-Mogtari, spokesperson for John Mahama has affirmed the promised made by Mahama and said it is unfair that foreign nationals and government appointees implicated in the Prof Frimgpong Boateng report on illegal mining have been left scot-free, while the galamsey operators suffer jail time.

“If there are many of our brothers and sisters languishing in prisons because of galamsey, certainly this is a matter that we must look at within the context of the Frimpong Boateng Report”, she stated. She further said if people are being bandied together and thrown into prison without necessarily going before the law, and in some cases wait years for a trial, there needs to be an investigation into it for some interventions to be employed.

On addressing illegal mining in the next NDC government, she said it will serve the country’s interest to have stakeholders in communities join the the conversation and grant amnesty to the illegal mining operators other than those cited in the Frimpong Boateng report.

Furthermore, she noted that if the party wins the upcoming election, it will invest $500 million to combat the illegal mining menace, known locally as ‘galamsey’.

MAHAMA’S THUGS BEAT TESCON STUDENT MERCILESSLY IN KUMASI

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Former President John Dramani Mahama was the keynote speaker for Christian Service University’s 50th anniversary in Kumasi. Delivering his lecture, John Maham jabbed Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia by describing his campaign trail as a “concert party”. A student at the gathering who is reportedly the organizer of pro-NPP group on the university campus, TESCON, wasn’t pleased with the statement.

Narrating the incidence to the media, the second year student of the university whose name is Nana Boakye said “I also responded and said, ‘Mahama wo boa’ na wo b3 wi’ [Meaning Mahama you’re lying, you will lose]. Later on, I saw a macho man who approached me and gave me a warning that I should be careful. So, I also asked him ‘What have I done’? And the moment I asked him the question, he came directly and slapped me in front of the former President. So on our way out of the auditorium, when we got to the main entrance of the auditorium, I heard another slap. Out of that, I was not able to see anything, and I also saw one guy who held my hand backwards, and they started beating me in my stomach, my head and stuff like that.”
